I used to play this game when I was a child in the 1960's, at Halloween parties, but with donuts. The object of the game was to eat enough of the pastry so it will fall off the string, if you were first you got a prize. I assume it's the same thing for apples, although I think it will take longer using apples.

In the late 19th century postal rates dropped drastically with the advent of the penny press and reorganization of the Post Office. The lower cost lead to an explosion of color postcards, many were for vacation spots and Christmas was the top subject, but Halloween was also pretty popular. Witches were quite a popular theme of these cards.
